The content production/consumption ratio leads to a sharp economy of attention that builds the popularity and financial value of information platforms. Both engines and social networks solely rely on a positive reading of 'links' or 'friends'. When decisions and divisions obey the rules of networking, traditional borders are overcome through a diffusion of the 'vote' which underlies democracy. These networking effects yet produce a hierarchy of disconnected discursive spheres. Engines always encode values, whether these are implicit at the level of the interface or already embedded at the indexing stage.
