Search engines and digital civil rights - recent issues and developments

Many have welcomed Web search engines as the tools providing effective access to an unprecedented amount of valuable and diverse information. At the same time, search intermediaries can pose new problems from the perspective of digital civil rights, e.g. the right of freedom of expression and information and the right of privacy. In this presentation I will focus on a number of recent issues and developments and point both to possible threats and positive developments in the search technology environment and the legal space they have to act in.
