Mongrel grew out of a series of powerful cultural and political exchanges at Artec, The London Technology Centre, in 1995. At the time there was little critical attitude to the exclusive nature of the emerging technologies and students discussed setting up a Mongrel organization to explore their own ways of making things. Today Mongrel consists of several people (the core members are Matsuko Yokokoji, Mervin Jarman, Richard Pierre-Davis and Harwood), machines and intelligences working to celebrate the methods of London street culture. Mongrel makes socially engaged culture, which sometimes is art, sometimes software, sometimes setting up workshops, or helping other mongrels to set things up.
