Ivanko is a former Russian journalist who worked for 'Izvestia' Daily, a leading Moscow newspaper from 1984 to 1994. From 1994 until 1998 he was posted as the United Nations Spokesman in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He joined the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media as an Adviser in October 1998.
