Hamelink is Professor of International Communication at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Guest-Professor of Communication Policy at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He studied moral philosophy and psychology at the University of Amsterdam where he graduated in 1968 and obtained his PhD in 1975. Hamelink is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal for Communication Studies: Gazette. He is adviser on various communication projects for UNESCO, UNRISD and the International Baccalaureate. He is also Honorary President of the International Association for Media and Communication Research and the founder of the People's Communication Charter. Hamelink has guest-lectured in some 40 countries and holds distinguished professorships at universities across the world. He has edited eight books and authored fourteen books on international communication, culture, human rights and information technology.
