Cities have become the key battleground of our increasingly urban world. From the slums of the global South to the wealthy financial centers of the West, political violence now operates through the sites, spaces, infrastructures and symbols of the world’s rapidly expanding metropolitan areas. Contemporary military and security doctrine increasingly encourages permanent state mobilization against urban civilians both within western cities and rapidly urbanizing global peripheries. A variety of social movements and artists do, however, work to deconstruct and denaturalize the new military urbanism.
