International Success for Public Netbase:
The Art of Hacking
or: World-Information.Org in Hamburg.
****************************************************

Although some Austrian politicians have not realized it yet, the Vienna Institute for New Technologies / Public Netbase is an internationally renowned and highly sought-after partner for art projects located at the interface of the new media, culture, and society.

This was seen yet again with the latest and quite extensive Public Netbase project, called World-Information.Org. This mosaic, consisting of the Internet data base, exhibitions, conferences and creative discussions on the complex subjects of information/ culture / technology, brought together an array of remarkable scientists, artists and net-culture advocates from around the world. World-Information.Org's "baptism of fire" took place between June 30 and July 30 in the European capital of culture, Brussels 2000.

Impressed by the numerous exhibitions, conferences, lectures and events in Brussels, a group of artists known as Knowbotic Research invited World-Information.Org to join them in working on a public art project in Hamburg. This project, called "Connective Force Attack", launches CD ROMs that allow uses to carry out hacker attacks against password-secured Internet data. Much of the information contained on these CD Roms touch on themes such as global data networks, information policy, economy and cryptography. This information is based on the treasure trove of information found at the World-Information.Org's "World Infostructure Exhibition".

"The artists say that, with this project [Connective Force Attack], they wanted to join the discussions on more security and freedom of opinion in the computer networks - which so far have been rather ambivalent. At Knowbotic Research, we don't see freedom of opinion from a sociopolitical viewpoint; instead, we see it as a freedom of action to create the potential for efficient activities and results." (Armin Medosch, Telepolis, Sept 14, 2000)
